Job Summary
The Chief Accountant will oversee the financial operations of the hotel and restaurant business, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and effective management of accounting functions. The role requires a strong understanding of hospitality financial processes, leadership skills, and the ability to optimize financial performance in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) specific to the hospitality industry, such as room revenue, food cost percentage, and occupancy rates.
Conduct monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reviews and variance analysis.
Accounting Operations:
Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and revenue recognition.
Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of all revenue streams, such as room sales, food and beverage income, and events.
Manage fixed asset accounting, inventory control, and cost allocations.
Compliance and Internal Controls:
Ensure compliance with local tax laws, hotel regulations, and financial reporting standards.
Develop, implement, and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard assets and improve operational efficiency.
Coordinate with auditors for internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts in collaboration with department heads.
Monitor expenditures to ensure alignment with budgetary goals and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Provide insights and recommendations to improve financial performance.
System and Process Management:
Maintain and improve financial systems, including property management systems and accounting software.
Streamline accounting processes to improve accuracy and efficiency.
Implement best practices in financial management and reporting.
Team Leadership and Coordination:
Supervise and mentor the accounting team, providing training and development opportunities.
Foster collaboration between finance and operational teams, ensuring alignment on financial goals.
Manage performance reviews and ensure high levels of staff engagement.
Strategic Contribution:
Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement financial strategies that support business growth.
Participate in feasibility studies for new projects, renovations, and other business initiatives.
Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure the financial stability of the organization.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A professional certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA, CMA) is highly preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 7 years in accounting, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or senior accounting role.
Experience in the hospitality industry, particularly with hotel and restaurant operations, is required.
Skills:
Proficiency in accounting software and hospitality management systems (e.g., Opera, Micros, or similar).
Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards and tax regulations.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and leadership abilities.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.
